Best Taverna of Crete !

What best to write about in my very first blog than my most favourite Taverna on Crete, which is located in Maza, and is called Costa's Caferion. The food here is truly heaven, as it's all made from local produce from Costa's own gardens, fields and grounds, or coming from his friends in the village and surroundings. Costa's whole family is helping out in the operations of the place, from the grilling on the barbecue, to the cooking of the fantastic dishes, to the serving and helping customers with anything they ask for. It's fantastic to see a family working together so united!
Some of Costa's Specialties
Although all the dishes are wonderful and made with love and dedication. Some of our favourites are the giant steaks that come of the barbecue, the typical Greek salad (Xoriatiki), or the delicious courgette balls (absolute must try!). Typical seasonal dishes would be rabbit with onions (Stifado), chicken in red wine sauce (Kotopoulo Kokkinisto), and artichokes in a lemony sauce (Aginares) - all of them are coming just straight from heaven instead of their kitchen.
What else is there to do?
Right opposite of the Taverna (Kafenion) is the church of St Nicholas Mazianos. Costa's taverna has the (large) key of the church if you're interested in having a look, which is absolutely recommendable! The church is dedicated to St Nicholas, of unclear medieval date, with an interior painted in 1325/6 by Ioannis Pagomenos. The church is a single-nave barrel-vaulted structure, covered by a tiled saddle roof and ending in an apse to the east. A picture can be found below.

I hope this first blog gives you some impression of what I'm trying to get started with this series - some insights in what to do on the West and South side of Crete, Greece.
