Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete

The Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete, located near the village of Fournes at the foothills of the White Mountains, stands as one of the island's most remarkable natural attractions. Spanning nearly 20 hectares, the park was established in 2003 after a devastating wildfire destroyed the region's ancient olive groves, some of which were over 400 years old. Today, a burnt centennial olive tree remains as a poignant memorial, symbolising both the tragedy and the renewal that followed.
The gardens are designed as a terraced walk, guiding visitors through a diverse landscape that showcases both the native flora of Crete and exotic species from around the world. The 2.5-kilometer trail winds through sections dedicated to tropical plants, citrus trees, medicinal and ornamental herbs, and vineyards. This unique blend is made possible by the area's microclimate, which supports an impressive variety of species, including many that are endemic to Crete and others from subtropical regions.

In addition to its botanical treasures, the park also features a small animal sanctuary with peacocks, donkeys, deer, ducks, and geese, making it appealing to visitors of all ages. Birdlife is abundant, with sightings of buzzards, kestrels, nightingales, and more, adding to the park's vibrant ecosystem.
A highlight for many is the on-site restaurant, which serves dishes made from the garden's own produce, offering guests a taste of authentic Cretan cuisine in a tranquil setting overlooking the terraces. The park provides ample opportunities for rest and reflection, with shaded spots and panoramic views throughout the walk.
Ultimately, the Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete is more than just a collection of plants; it is a living testament to resilience and creativity, offering a peaceful and educational escape into the heart of Cretan nature. A visit to the Gardens is less than an hour drive from Halases Panorama Villa and therefore can be (part of) a great day trip.
