Georgioupoli and it's Beaches

06/06/2025

With the summer getting close, and the sun becoming stronger, it's time to write about some beaches in the area of Halases Panorama Villa (aka Villa Halases).

Georgioupouli is a charming seaside village in northwestern Crete, Greece, offering visitors a nice blend of natural beauty, authentic Cretan culture, and a wealth of activities. This small fishing village, nestled between Chania and Rethymno, is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere, tree-lined streets, and proximity to some of Crete's most stunning beaches.

Within the village, life centres around the picturesque main square, where travellers can enjoy traditional Cretan cuisine in cozy tavernas, browse local shops, or unwind in friendly cafés. The whitewashed Agios Nikolaos Chapel, perched on rocks at the end of a causeway, is a must-see landmark, offering breathtaking views and a serene spot for reflection. For relaxation, visitors can indulge in wellness treatments at local spas or enjoy the village's relaxed nightlife, with various bars providing live music and a welcoming atmosphere.

Georgioupouli's main draw is its expansive sandy beach, stretching over 10 kilometers—one of the longest in Crete. The beach is well-organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards, and shallow waters, making it ideal for families and children. Kalivaki Beach, located near the mouth of the Almyros River, is particularly popular for its cool, clear waters and tranquil setting, perfect for swimming and sunbathing, especially with children as the water is shallow.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from horse riding along the shore and through olive groves, to cycling, hiking, and exploring the lush countryside. Water sports such as windsurfing, paddle-boarding, and scuba diving are readily available, catering to all skill levels. For a change of scenery, Lake Kournas—the only freshwater lake in Crete—is just a short trip away, offering paddle boating, kayaking, and wildlife watching in a stunning natural setting.

One hidden gem that I'll write about in another blog is a fish restaurant called Poseidon, where Nikos cooks fish close to perfection. I don't want to give away too much yet!

In summary, Georgioupouli is an inviting destination where visitors can immerse themselves in Cretan hospitality, enjoy pristine beaches, and partake in a variety of activities, all set against the backdrop of Crete's captivating landscape. The village is only 15 min drive from Halases Panorama Villa and therefore is the perfect spot for people who like the tranquility of a small mountain village (Alikampos) to stay in the evening, but the busier beach areas during the day which can be found in Georgioupouli.
