Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas, nestled in the northwest of Crete near the village of Kournas, stands as the island's only natural freshwater lake and a unique ecological treasure. Surrounded by the dramatic slopes of the White Mountains and lush greenery, the lake is located just a few kilometers from the sea, straddling the boundary between the Chania and Rethymno regions. With a maximum length of almost 1,100 meters, a width of 880 meters, and a depth reaching 22.5 meters, Lake Kournas covers an area of nearly 58 hectares, making it the largest natural lake in Crete.

The origins of Lake Kournas are both geological and legendary. Scientifically, it was formed by the collapse of an underground cave roof due to the dissolution of limestone rocks, a classic example of so-called karst phenomenon. Local legends, however, offer more mystical explanations, including tales of a young woman transformed into a fairy to escape her father's advances, and stories of a biblical-style flood that left only a virtuous daughter as a survivor. The Lake's name likely derives from the Arabic word "kurna," meaning "lake" or "wash-basin," a reflection of Crete's multicultural history.

Lake Kournas is a haven for biodiversity, protected under the Natura 2000 network. The Lake's clear waters and surrounding wetlands host a variety of flora and fauna, including rare turtles, terrapins, eels, goldfish, and over 130 species of birds such as herons, ducks, and cormorants. The area is popular for swimming, pedal boating, and picnicking, with small beaches forming as water levels recede in summer - all together making it a destination for a great day out.

Taverns and cafes line the shore, offering visitors a taste of traditional Cretan hospitality against the backdrop of the Cretan hills and the White mountains. Whether for its natural beauty, rich legends, or ecological significance, Lake Kournas remains a captivating destination for locals and tourists alike. The Lake is only about a 20-25 min drive from Halases Panorama Villa, hence ideally located for a day trip.
