The Imbros Gorge
The Imbros Gorge is one of Crete's most spectacular natural attractions, located in the province of Sfakia in southwestern Crete. While the gorge is often cited as being up to 11 kilometres long overall, the main hiking route that most visitors experience is about 8 kilometres, descending from the village of Imbros (or Nimbros) at an altitude of around 700–780 meters, down to the village of Komitades near the Libyan Sea. The height difference of this descent is approximately 650 meters, making for a dramatic but manageable hike suitable for most fitness levels.

The gorge is renowned for its striking rock formations, with towering cliffs that reach up to 300 meters in height and narrow passages—most famously the "Iron Gates", where the walls narrow to just 1.6 meters apart. The hike is mostly downhill, with the trail winding through a landscape of old cypresses, oaks, maples, and fragrant herbs, especially vibrant in spring when wildflowers are in bloom. The path follows the remnants of an ancient mule trail that once connected Chania to Hora Sfakion, and still bears the marks of historical events, including battles during the Turkish occupation and the evacuation of thousands of Allied soldiers during World War II.
Imbros Gorge is considered a less strenuous and less crowded alternative to the famous Samaria Gorge, typically taking 2–3 hours to complete, depending on pace and stops. Although less famous, it definitely is not less beautiful! The route is accessible year-round except during heavy rain or snow, and does not require special equipment—just sturdy shoes, water, and sun protection. At the end of the hike, visitors are rewarded with the opportunity to relax in Komitades, enjoying local Cretan cuisine and views of the Libyan Sea.

From Halases Panorama Villa in Alikampos, the entrance of the Imbros Gorge can be reached in about half hour drive up into the mountains to the south. Don't forget to eat a Sfakian Pita either before or after the hike (see also the previous blog)!
In summary, the Imbros Gorge offers a memorable hiking experience through dramatic landscapes and rich history, with an 8 kilometre descent and a 650-meter drop in elevation, making it a highlight for nature lovers and history enthusiasts visiting Crete. Definitely worth a go!
